Today’s statement by Defra on updated measures after 28th February, to reduce the risk of the spread of AI is welcome, and fully supported by the poultry meat sector. The full details can be found here.

BPC Chief Executive, Richard Griffiths, said: “Defra’s experts have reviewed the risk and are making sensible, science-based recommendations. The whole industry takes very seriously the responsibility to stamp-out bird flu from the UK.”

Defra’s identification of higher risk areas allows the poultry meat sector to focus the effort and resource where it is most needed.

The move will also support continued free-range production in lower risk areas, albeit with enhanced biosecurity measures.

Across the whole of the UK it will remain crucial that all keepers of poultry maintain a high level of compliance with biosecurity measures as laid out.
